But That’s Not Really The Point Is It?

Do you enjoy your job?

This is something that my man and I have talked about a lot. We were both raised with two different answers to this type of questions. I was taught to pursue a career that you are passionate about, to “love what you do, and you’ll never work another day in your life”. He was taught that your job was to provide for yourself and your family and to use the income from your job to pursue the things you are actually passionate about.

Let me give you an example. Say that animals are your passion. You can pursue your love of animals in two different ways. You can either get a job working with animals or you can get a job unrelated to animals. If you get a job unrelated to animals, you can volunteer with animals in your free time. Sometimes when your passion becomes your job it can negatively impact your passion. Jobs can suck. Management can suck. If you get to the point where you dread going to work at a job that used to be your passion, it can be completely demoralizing.

Speaking from experience, I used to have a job that I absolutely loved. It was a high stress job, but I thrived in the high stress environment. Over time, however, overbearing management and an inability to take time off led to burnout. I grew to dread going in every day.

It can be different if you are working for yourself at something that you enjoy. But not all of us can afford to do that. Sometimes you have to choose the job that makes more money, even if the job itself is boring.

Enjoying your job is nice but being able to put food on the table is more important.
