Tress Of The Emerald Sea: A Positive Perspective

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge #6: Read a standalone fantasy book.

Brandon Sanderson is a pretty popular name in the fantasy genre. When I mentioned to my brother-in-law that I’d never read one of Sanderson’s books, he was appalled and suggested I remedy it as soon as possible.

As with most of his book and movie recommendations, he was 100% right, and I should never doubt him again.

This book reminded of Princess Bride meets Treasure Planet, two of the things I love most in this world. It was absolutely amazing, and it might end up being my favorite book of the year. It is one that I will definitely reread.

All the characters are great. The humor is spot on. The world is strange and unique, but it’s built so incredibly well. It’s believable. I want to sail the spores and inevitably die when I sweat on them. Or cry. Or both.

There is not a single character in this story that I didn’t enjoy. The possibly evil captain, loved her. The sorceress, lots of fun. The cat that tried to eat the beloved rat character, made sense so I’m not mad about it.

There were a lot of characters. But they all had distinct personalities and quirks. They didn’t all have equal screentime perse. The screentime they did have, however, they definitely made the most of. I could have read an entire book about any of them. Even the Dougs, which is the name given to all the miscellaneous hands on deck, because per the narrator there are too many to name and keep track of.

It’s just so good. I’m honestly probably going to go reread it now. Just writing this is making me want to read it again. So you should definitely give it a try.
