Lesser Knowns You Should Own #2: Business & Money
We’ve established that I read a lot in all sorts of genres. Fiction, nonfiction, comic books, I love them all. But this genre is probably my least favorite. It’s the category I reach towards the least and, funnily enough, is my husband’s favorite.
This book is a combination of advice on how to succeed in business plus a sociological type of study. The author has attempted to find the key developable attributes that the best candidates have in common. Twelve of these attributes are explored in the book.
The author does a good job explaining what the traits are, how they are useful for business as well as regular life, and how to develop them.
A lot of books like this tell you how to “be better”. But they do it in a way that sounds both unachievable and insulting. This book is not like that.
At no point does the author come across as condescending. He utilizes statistics, quotes from the survey participants, and real world comparisons to make this a fun read for anyone.
I have honestly learned a lot in this book and have already taken some of the recommended steps to incorporate some of what makes a unicorn into my daily life. Not only does being more like a unicorn sound like a majestic idea on its own, but, in the context of this book, being a unicorn is when someone is the kind of person, the kind of candidate, that pretty much anyone would be lucky to have in their organization. They add to the company when they are a part of it. They are genuinely an asset and make work better, not just for themselves but for their coworkers as well. These people don’t just impact one job. By impacting the world around them, they show themselves to be a diamond in the rough kind of person or a unicorn as the author puts it. No one is perfect, not even unicorns, but a unicorn owns their mistakes, fixes it if necessary, and moves on. (Instead of dwelling on that time you misspoke and told the ticket checker at the theater “you too” when they told you to enjoy the movie.)
Even if you don’t read a lot of business/ money books, I would recommend trying this one. It is a quick and easy read with quite a bit of humor. Might as well have a little fun and learn something along the way.
