This is the 56th book in this series. 56th. Basically, there have been two books published per year since 1995. With this many books, you would expect at least some of them to be… how we say… less than great. Adjust those expectations though because every single book is marvelous.
Our main character, Eve Dallas, is the Lieutenant of the Homicide Division of the NYPSD (New York Police and Security Department). She is everything a police officer is supposed to be. The motto of the homicide division, hanging on the wall inside bullpen, states, “No matter your race, creed, sexual orientation, or political affiliation, we protect and serve. Because you could get dead.* *Even if you were an asshole.”
And these aren’t just words to the cops that serve under Dallas. They live by those words. It doesn’t matter who you were. They put their entire selves into solving your murder. And it doesn’t matter if a fellow cop is a suspect. Because if they don’t serve and protect, they don’t deserve to wear the badge.
These books are a conglomeration of genres that make it difficult to fully describe. They are murder mysteries/crime thrillers set in the future that have a common thread of a romance. And every aspect of it is done well. The romance is one of my favorite fictional couples of all time. If your man doesn’t love and support you like Roarke supports Eve, then get a new man.
I will keep reading this series even if there are another 56 books. And every novella in between. It is the perfect thing for a reader that grew up on every crime show on television: CSI, CSI New York, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI Miami, The Closer, The Mentalist, Perry Mason, Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Columbo, or the many other shows that I cannot recall the names of.
I would recommend starting at the beginning so that you build the relationships with these characters that are part of what make a long running series so great. Click the link below to start with the first book, Naked In Death, or check out all 57 from your local library and binge read them. I won’t judge.
