Book Riot Read Harder Challenge #16: Read a genre blending book.
This book has been popping up on my Goodreads and Kindle recommendations for months at this point so I figured I would use this challenge to finally read it. And boy does my algorithm know me well.
The third book of this series comes out in August, and you best believe I’ll be glued to that book. Nobody better text me or call me or need anything until I find out what happens.
It’s that good. Office romance meets fantasy. Our main characters: the assistant and the villain are absolutely precious when one of them isn’t firing arrows at interns or hanging decapitated heads from the ceiling. The office doesn’t even sound that bad. They are practicing villainy but are paid well and have a great HR lady.
One of the best things about this series is the villainy. It isn’t an attempt to reform the villain: to get him to see the errors of his ways and become a knight in armor. Instead, the sweet heroine becomes more herself and embraces villainy in the process.
The romance aspect is a slow-burn. You will yell at them to kiss already. But, it is so satisfying.
And I would go to war for all of the side characters, especially Kingsley (the frog who wears a crown and carries around a slate to communicate) and the dragon (who is scared of everything).
I love everything about the world this author has created. If you are anything like me, you probably will too.
