It is no secret that I love dragons. I have a dragon tattoo that covers my left hand. The notebook in which I am currently writing a novel has a dragon on the front. This is one of the many reasons why every single one of my fellow bookworm friends have been screaming at me to read this book.
Naturally, I succumbed to peer pressure and read the first two books and now I am waiting in a never-ending line at my library to check out the third book which just came out.
And, it should come as no surprise, my friends were right, and I genuinely enjoy the series. As someone who struggles with chronic illness, having a chronically ill heroine as the lead in a fantasy series makes me incredibly happy.
You also get to see how different characters respond to Violet’s illness in ways that are very familiar to anyone with a chronic illness.
Some characters try to coddle her and do everything for her. You can tell that they do genuinely care about her, but they are going about it the wrong way.
Some characters think that she is less than due to her illness and mock her for her limitations.
And the all-star characters are the ones that treat her like a normal person. They let her complete the task in her own way. They offer accomodations when necessary. They help in a way that supports her without taking away her agency.
There are also dragons, a steamy romance, strong female friendships, a complex magic system, family drama, and things that totally aren’t zombies (but kinda are).
It’s a fun series, and I will continue waiting in this line until I get the third book.
