We’re over halfway through the year which means I am over half way done with this year’s Read Harder Challenge. Click here to check out the books that have been so far and the books that are yet to come.
What surprises me when I look back at the books read so far this year are the recurring themes: LGBTQIA+ history and struggles as well as the history and struggles of indigenous peoples. The latter is the basis for this book.
Gansworth is a three-tier artistic genius. His artwork is interspersed throughout the story. I mean just look at how amazing that cover page is.
His poetry and his prose are mixed together in a way that evokes all of the intended emotions. Being good at drawing, writing poetry, and writing shorter stories are all separate skills. Finding someone who can so effortlessly blend them all together is one of the ways this memoir is so unique.
Gansworth manages to make this a book that can appeal to children, young adult, and adult audiences. Which means, no matter who you are, you can read, enjoy the story, and learn something.
