This Place: 150 Years Retold

The things I knew about Canada and about Canadian history prior to reading this graphic novel anthology consisted of it being the country of Ryan Reynolds.

While I have read non-fiction and historical fiction graphic novels, I have never read a graphic novel anthology. That’s why this absolutely amazing book consisting of thought-provoking and moving short stories was the perfect choice for this reading challenge.

These stories center around the history of indigenous peoples in Canada. Ranging from the late 1800s to an imagined future, these story are beautifully drawn.

You are drawn into the world of the native peoples of Canada and empathise with their struggles and their continued fight for equal treatment. You are exposed to their different languages and some of their traditions.

Not to mention, any historical story about a woman beating a man with a horsewhip brings me so much joy.

Being a collection told through the eyes of indigenous creators, you can feel how much each author cares about their people and their culture. It leaves you with a burning desire to know more. This desire means that I am actually reading the bibliography to find additional books to learn more about these resilient peoples.
