The Wayward Children: A Positive Perspective

It is a rare moment that you read something that feels truly original. This is one of those series.

As with any series, some of the books will connect with more readers than with others, but all of the books are a fun trip into the fantasy worlds Seanan McGuire has created.

The premise is that sometimes when children go missing, they disappear through a doorway into a fantasy world that has chosen them. But then they slip back into our world and feel lost and confused. That’s where Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children comes in. It’s a home for children who have experienced this.

Each book in the series follows a different kid and their adventures in our world and in their fantasy world. They are delicious bite-sized nuggets of story that are quick and easy reads while maintaining a sense of fun and childhood fantasy throughout.

The method of storytelling is unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It manages to convey the fun and chaotic nature of the story itself. Somehow it is equally entertaining on audiobook and on physical/digital copies.

There is diversity. There are multiple LGBTQIA+ characters, characters of varying races and ethnicities, and body-positive characters.

I just love this series so much. It is without a doubt one of the most fun series I have read in a long time. You should definitely check it out!
