What is your favorite drink?
There are some foods that transport you to places of wonder. Tastes that take you to places you may never actually travel. Smells that remind you of a special memory. A good drink can do that too.
My absolute favorite drink is mead. If you have never had mead or have only heard about it in media, it is basically wine but made with honey instead of grapes. It is one of the oldest beverages in the world. We can date it back to at least 4,000 years ago. Honey itself is even older than that. Humans have been collecting honey for at least 8,000 years. And that honey, if you are adventurous, could still be consumed because honey never expires. It is one of the most amazing foods in the world, and we have the bees to thank for it.
I am the only person that I have met that actually loves it. It is just impossible to drink mead without feeling like a medieval queen presiding over a feast full of your knights and subjects. In mythology, it is even referred to as “the drink of the gods”. Some sources even say that it has healing properties and was used to help heal soldiers after battle.
It is hard to describe the actual taste. It can be served warm or cool. The closest thing I can think of is an herbed tea with honey. It is unlike anything else I have ever had. The sweetness balances out the alcohol in a way that can be both delicious and dangerous to your liver, but you can get an alcohol-free version.
If you will excuse me, I am going to go pour myself a generous mugful.
