If there was a biography about you, what would the title be?
This is technically an idea for a memoir, but it is close enough to this prompt that I am going to use it anyway.
When I was in college, I developed major depressive disorder. Therapists put me on a variety of different medications. One of those was what is considered a “black-box” medication. Some anti-depressants have a warning on them, typically in a black box, that they can make depression worse-especially for young people. They help to give you energy, but they don’t really help with the depression which contributes to an increased risk of suicide and suicide attempts.
To make a long story short, it was the perfect cocktail for me to fit into the percentage that is negatively affected by those medications.
I ended up going to a psychiatric hospital for a bit. I met a ton of amazing people. One woman who required more care due to hallucinations of bugs crawling under her skin. A trans-woman who was completing the, required at the time, stint to medically transition. A very angry man who kept having to be put into isolation. A woman with severe bipolar disorder who would check herself in every now and again to get her medication fixed in a controlled environment.
While there, I was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and placed on a medication that was, essentially, a horse tranquilizer. Disagreeing with the staff tended to prolong your stay. We were not allowed to miss or cut back on meals because they would indicate another disorder. That plus almost no physical activity caused me to significantly gain weight.
It gave me the break to focus on my mental health that I needed, but it also gave me a slew of complexes that I still deal with today.
This is only part of the story. What do you think? Would you read this book?
